Minis Review - Shinsengumi !

Image
Hi all, So recently I saw a post online that featured some amazing Shinsengumi minis. I was instantly enamoured as these minis were exactly what I were looking for to represent a Koryu sword school in Ronin or a Renegade list in Test of Honour. After some research I found that they were available from Bac Ninh Minatures based in Portugal. Web: http://bacninhminiatures.blogspot.com / These 28mm minis come in three sets and are priced as 8.50€ for a pack of 4 and 3€ for a single character. Pretty good prices I thought for what seems to be a very small supplier. The models work out to be just over two euros per model! I ended up buying one pack of the basic Shinsengumi members and one pack of the heroes. My knowledge on the Shinsengumi is somewhat limited but they were a force of ultra conservative Samurai who were drawn from sword schools in Edo. They existed for a short period at the end of the Samurai's rein and were instrumental in some battles during the Bos

Test of Honour - School in Session

So this is a very quick write-up of a demo game of Test of Honour. We played two games. The first was to capture as many objectives as you could by turn 5. The second game was a simple "kill the samurai" scenario. The two squads teams were both 15 points and composed of a very similar setup. Team 1 had spearmen with the leader armed with a mighty tetsubo. Team 2 had Ronin and their leader had a heavy sword (nodachi) We took turns in setting up the terrain and the position of our troops. Nothing overly tactical here.  Our second in command troops both had the same idea and quickly jumped over the fences to claim the central objective. A fight broke out but only resulted in both slightly wounding each other for a blood drop each. My musketman set up by the fence and took a shot off at the blue samurai. HIT and as the enemy samurai was out of actions he was not able to dodge. Strength 4 gun plus one blood drop = 5 dice to roll for the kill.. Sure enough the

Another game of Ronin by Osprey! We were using the normal rules with the inclusion of the latest FAQ, which modified some of the weapons. Samurai Buntai lead by Darth Vader San & Sohei "totally not-ninja" school  William: (Samurai) 2 Ashigaru with yari, 1 Ashigaru with Yumi, 1 Ashigaru Sargent Neil: (Kohei sword school) 1 x Sensei, 1 x Novice, 4 x Initate, 1 x Kohai Scum - Peasant rabble & dishonoured Samurai Paul & James  Paul (Ikko Ikki) Sohei monks armed with naginata + 1 Teppo) James (Samuri) 4 Samurai armed with Katana and + 1 Yumi The scenario was to gain control of the central objective by turn 6. We took alternating turns for the setup, which involved placing terrain in accordance to the randomised procedure set out in the rulebook.  The opposing team henceforth named "Scum" had quite a few archers in their team and in Ronin they have a surprisingly long range. I was keen to not be shot up so deployed to maximise the cover
